Mrs. Monica Atkinson
I work with all fifth graders in the areas of language arts and science. In fifth grade, we emphasize writing skills in all areas. The Six Traits Plus One of Writing are the focus of our writing program. In addition to the daily practice, special projects give the students a chance to showcase the skills they are learning in all area of Language Arts. The students create a number of books throughout the school year as part of the work they do in language arts. Extra work is done in the area of vocabulary to enhance the students writing and expression. Speaking opportunities also help the students refine their oral presentation skills. The approach used in the teaching of science is a hands-on approach with the labs designed to help the students grasp the concepts presented. The students study life science, earth science, physical science, and the human body. Our established nature center is incorporated in the lessons throughout the year. The students put their religion into practice in the fifth grade with a variety of service projects. They create quilts which are based on the Laura Ingalls Wilder books. These quilts are given to special needs babies at the end of the school year at a prayer service. The students also have an opportunity to serve at the St. Vincent de Paul Meal Program. They make cards and special greetings for the parish shut-ins. They also write valentine greetings to the Veterans at Woods, which is a veteran's hospital in our area. Activities are created to help enhance the learning and encourage student success.
