Mrs. Alissa TurnerHello, my name is Alissa Turner and I am the music teacher at St. Matthias. Let me take a moment to introduce myself.Born and raised in Kenosha, I am the oldest of three girls. I graduated in 2003 from Carthage College with a major in Music Education and a certificate to teach general and vocal music. While in college, I toured 5 countries in Europe with the Carthage Choir performing in The Czech Republic, Germany, France, Switzerland, and Austria. It was an amazing learning experience both culturally and musically! In the fall of '03, I did my student teaching in the Kenosha Unified School District spending time at the elementary and high school levels. In the spring of ‘04, I taught choir and general music at St. Joseph Interparish Junior High and High School as a long-term substitute teacher. Thankfully, my position at St. Joe's led me to St. Matthias where I am blessed to be living out my dream - to teach music. Some of the things you can expect to do in music class include: playing classroom instruments, reading and composing musical compositions, exploring music history, studying famous artists, and singing. With so many avenues to study, there is never a dull moment. Each year the first through fourth grades present a Christmas musical. The Kindergartens also reenact the Christmas story in their own production with the Jr. Kindergarten. In the spring, the fifth through eighth graders present a musical. The theme of the musical changes from year to year; it’s always an exciting event. I am also the director of the St. Matthias Parish Youth Choir. Choir is open to students from the school as well as the parish. We meet once a week after school and sing once a month for Sunday 9 am Mass. In addition, we perform for various community and archdiocesan events throughout the year.
