Mr. Kevin Buelow

I am very happy to be a part of an excellent team of teachers here at St. Matthias. From the first week I could tell that the students, teachers, and parents would make my teaching experience at St. Matthias enjoyable. I would like to paint a small picture for you what it is like to be in room 201 as a student. I have two guiding ideas of how to create a community within my classroom.

If you were to walk into our classroom, you would see students helping one another with their class work, reminding each other of the class rules, and friendships being created. Each student, from the first day of school is paired with a partner. Partners are responsible for helping one another to keep on task, aiding in class work, and making friendships. The idea of partnership helps students to create a sense of being apart of something larger then themselves.

In our classroom, students receive rewards and consequences not only for their individual behavior, but as a classroom. Students learn responsibility for their own behavior, but also responsibility working as a group. Many students enjoy the reward of having a class movie and snack, or an individual homework pass. Students also learn quickly that a recess staying inside for not doing their homework is fair, but not fun. As a result, our class learns to work together to create a fun and enjoyable place to learn.
