Mrs. Kathy DavisThe second graders in Mrs. Davis’ class are quite a busy bunch! It is a very exciting year and the most special part of the year is preparing for First Eucharist. We spend most of the year learning about our faith, our church, and the Mass. One of our service projects is to decorate symbolic baptismal gowns to welcome the babies baptized at St. Matthias Parish. The children are becoming terrific readers, and they share this love for reading each month by presenting a favorite book. Each of these presentations is videotaped and at the end of the school year each child will have a video keepsake. The children are also expected to read at least 300 minutes each month, and many children read far more than the minimum. These second graders are also very busy writing. Most days they spend a short time writing in their personal journals or dialogue journals they share with their seventh grade Star Partners! They also create wonderful short stories, personal narratives and poetry. We display much of this work outside our classroom for all to see. We also have some great mathematicians in our classroom. We review and strengthen our basic addition and subtraction facts by participating in Rocket Math. As the year progresses we learn how to tell time, count money, make change, and add and subtract with regrouping. There are many other new and exciting things that we experience in second grade, and every day is an adventure! |
