S. Rita JadinRm. 116 is a PACKAGE of learning – word walls, learning games, experiments, and discovery. Throughout the day in first grade our learning experience includes and integration of reading, phonics, spelling, and language arts. Students work for fluency, expression, comprehension, and enjoyment while reading. They are encouraged to use the new high-frequency words and phonetic word patterns in writing stories and journaling. Learning games reinforce the reading, phonics, and math curriculum. Math concepts and facts are acquired through the use of vocabulary, manipulatives, and story problems. Students enjoy the various ways the concepts are presented and reviewed. Even at this primary level algebra is taught. The science curriculum includes life science, physical science, earth science, and the human body. Students DISCOVER and are AWED by the experiments that unlock the concepts. These experiments are recorded in their lab manuals. What a wonderful way to revisit and review their learning experience! Students learn about their environment and neighborhood in social studies. They belong to the world. Good citizenship means working together and making right choices. Through maps and projects they become aware of their place in the world and who they are, meet various cultures, understand their historical beginnings, and celebrate historical leaders and holidays. JESUS is the REASON we are at St. Matthias. We are marked through Baptism with Jesus’ sign, the cross. As we continue our journey to heaven, we need to accept all because Jesus dwells in all. Therefore, we collect items for various service projects. We reach out to our brothers and sisters at Annunciation House in El Paso, TX. We, too, like Mary, our Mother, say “YES” so Jesus continues to be born in us and in the world. Students are eager to sing and answer the celebrant’s questions at Friday’s liturgies. Students, of course, also engage in art, computers, music, Spanish, and gym. Everyday is a SURPRISE and a new opportunity to become more like Jesus. I am very excited about this school year. With the help and support of parents and God’s blessing we will achieve marvels. I believe every child can learn, and the possibilities for success are limitless. Repetition and encouragement, however, will make concepts permanent. Thus, parents are an important ingredient that will help make their children SHINE. Together in God we become a rainbow of excellence. |
