Mrs. Mary Tretow

My name is Mary Tretow and I am the Reading Center Coordinator. My goal is to make every child a life-long reader. To succeed in life you must be a reader. Reading doesn’t just happen. It is a skill that must be nurtured from little on. Here at St. Matthias we are doing just that. From the youngest students to the oldest we are promoting that we are a school of readers. Reading matters!

We have several programs that take place during the school year to promote this. We have Reading Buddies where each child in the school is matched with a partner. Once a week they come together to read to share a book. In the beginning of the year it is the older child doing the reading. Soon after that the younger child has begun to be the reader.

We also have a program called Battle of the Books. It is for grades 4th, 5th and 6th. It is a reading incentive program, designed to promote reading comprehension, team building and friendly competition. It begins in November and ends in March with a “battle” to determine the best team of readers.

These are just a few things that we do to show reading matters.

In the Reading Center, I work with all reading abilities, grade levels, small groups and one on one tutoring. Working closely with the classroom teachers lets me know exactly how the students of St. Matthias can best be served.
