St. Matthias Catholic Parish

Our church and community is located at 9306 West Beloit Road, and currently celebrating our 175th anniversary (1850 –2025). Its history spans from early German immigrant roots to its current status as one of the largest parishes in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee

Early Foundations (1845–1851)

  • Origins: The community began around 1845 as a German Catholic settlement known as "Holy Cross".

  • Establishment: In 1850, Bishop John Martin Henni formally established the parish, naming it after St. Matthias as a tribute to Father Mathias Steiger, an itinerant priest who served the local community.

  • First Church (1851): The original 32-by-50-foot structure was dedicated in June 1851 on land donated by three local farming families at a site known as "Whiskey Corners".

Expansion and Modern Church (1883–Present)

  • Second Church (1883): As the congregation grew, a brick Gothic Revival church was built to replace the original. It served the parish for over 80 years until it was demolished in the mid-1960s to make way for the current facility.

  • Current Church (1966–1967):

    • Architecture: Designed by Darby-Bogner Associates, the current building features a distinctive mid-century modern, diamond-shaped design with a soaring gable roof.

    • Stained Glass: It houses what was once considered one of the world's largest installations of slab glass (faceted glass set in epoxy), designed by Conrad Schmitt Studios.

    • Dedication: Construction began in 1965, the cornerstone was laid in 1966, and the building was dedicated in May 1967

Parish Milestones

  • Education: A school was first established in 1866; the School Sisters of St. Francis have served the parish school since 1905.

  • Leadership Change: In 2023, the parish welcomed Fr. Jerry Herda as its Pastor.

  • 175th Anniversary: The parish is hosting commemorative events throughout 2025 and 2026 to celebrate its founding.
